Meathook: that's interesting. I used to think that "hoser" was a type of phallic insult, like calling someone a dick or prick.

In terms of "goof", perhaps it does mean "pedophile" or "skinner" in the Canadian prison context, but I've heard it used simply as a strong substitute for "moron", "imbecile" or "shithead."

In some places and contexts, "goof" could mean a pedophile, but in the non-prison culture of most of Canada, it could simply mean a stupid, contemptible jerk or loser, and it's still a pretty strong insult even in those cases.

First off Hoser was a slang before Bob & Doug. It was a term used for losers of a hockey game, who had to literally HOSE the ice after the game. Goof means just that Sexual Predator, usually consisting of the child variety.

Sony used to be a good company, maybe 10 years ago. Back when their flagship boombox sounded fairly decent. Even so, there were a ton of other boomboxes that would have blown that one out of the water. Sony used to make only "decent" products. Nothing special, but at-least they put a little effort into their products back then.

That said, their Flagship products are an even worse value. (I've heard their top of the line Hi-Fi system which sounds like the purest Low-fi with distinctly muddy bass, harsh treble, strident highs, tons of distortion, and very, poor imaging. (these qualities are true with their headphones too, it's Sony's signature!

Each and every Sony headphone I've ever auditioned, even their current flagship which retails for $400 is complete crap in terms of sound quality. No, I've never bought a Sony headphone before because I'm smarter than that.

Sony is probably the sole reason why certain people believe Japanese companies are bad. They are only popular because they are a company that the average housewife knows about. Sony is a great example of an awful company, misrepresenting Japan's great companies: Pioneer, Audio Technica, Technics, etc.

Eh has 27 different meanings, from asking a question, to asserting a truth, to getting attention, to signalling the start of a secret invasion of Arkansas. Hoser supposedly means someone who steals gas, but mostly means you like Bob and Doug McKenzie. Newfie is an insult in the East but gets more congenial as you go West.

a tool in eastern Canada is calling someone an real idiot
a goof is equivalent to calling someone a pedophile (in some regions)
Calling someone either of these to their face can get you in a serious fight

Postscript in April 2012:
Looking back at this, to figure out when we first found out about Kate Beaton - I'm so pleased that I blogged it here!

We went to meet her at SPX in Bethesda MD in September of 2008, and were the only people at the table she was sharing with several friends, although a few people commented at that time that a bunch of people had come by to see her.

Fast forward - in later years at SPX so many people came to line up to see her that the line disrupted the flow of traffic around the convention ballroom. They had to move her booth so that her line could snake out and down an adjacent hallway. She has 40,000+ followers on Twitter, and her first major published collection has been on the NYT bestseller list for many weeks (don't make me look up how many).

The original thing I linked to was a collection of 20 comics about historical figures, where she solicited her readers to suggest interesting figures to write about. She continued that series for a while after the initial round of interest in it, and if you dig through her archives many of the posts are on historical themes.

Over the years her drawing style has changed somewhat and she's re-drawn some comics, so the archives on her current site don't include all the original comics that I would have been linking to four years ago.

That link no longer works, but her work can be found at her main site:
<a href="http://harkavagrant.com/" rel="nofollow">Hark! A Vagrant!</a>
as well as on Tumblr and Twitter and probably more in coming years.

So glad to see someone rising to prominence so clearly on the basis of their obvious talent. Go Kate Beaton.

It took me probably 2 years to get through this. I can only imagine how you found day one of week 5 when you finally got to it. That was damned hard after a not-so-bad day three of week four.

I did eventually finish the thing and maxed out at about 110 pushups in a row.

A goof is a rat or skin beefer (sex crime of any sort) and other such things... It has nothing to do with being a "skinhead" in any way as stated above. I think that was a mere non-intentional mis-statement or a personal grudge by *Bobby 09-Aug-09 at 1:46 am*

Weeeeeeell, 1) "recently" is pretty vague. Could mean "within the last few years" and 2) it gets it's meaning from the context here, which includes the date stamp of the post.
