Hmmm. Another default position (albeit not as grave as the “if in doubt, don’t kill” one) is “don’t criticize what you don’t understand”. And for some real nit-picking, advocating (or approving of) killing people (aka war) isn’t exactly the same as actually killing them.

So I don’t really get the basis of the double-standard for advocating/opposing war. Stuff happens in the world and people take positions (or don’t) for or against stuff. I would certainly hope that the intensity etc. of the positions people take would be proportionate to both the issue’s importance and their knowledge thereof.

I think if Obama decided to bomb Portugal in the morning people who don’t know their Iberia from their asshole would be well-founded in their default anti-war position. But when there is an obvious (not necessarily convincing) case for war (as is the case in Libya) then I think your knowledge bar is unreasonably high to be a mere “supporter” of the war – publishing op-eds etc. is another matter of course.

not to nitpick, but it looks like you’re only counting the 6 countries with direct land borders with libya. i would argue that two other countries (malta and italy) have a lot at stake here too. italy was already flooded with refugees from tunisia’s much more peaceful revolution. and because the great majority of libyans live along the coast the connections along sea routes are arguably more important than, say, the border with niger along depopulated empty desert.
